Loxam UK is leading the way in the UK access industry with manufacturer approved and fitted secondary guarding devices (SGD).

As active members of the UK and International IPAF committees Loxam UK have for a long time been directly involved in the discussions regarding the use of SGD’s.  It fully supports the initiatives of user groups such as UKCG as well as IPAF in trying to mitigate the severity of any form of crushing whilst working at height with powered access.

When the discussions first started the accident statistics suggested the frequency was low but the severity was high, something had to be done said Darrel Voce Loxam UK Technical Manager. Since those early days many solutions have been developed by companies and contractors either by the equipment rental companies themselves or by third parties working on their behalf.

Loxam as Europe’s number one rental company have from the outset taken a very different view to many of its competitors.  It firmly believes that safety systems must be:

“developed by the original manufacturer, for their machines and fitted permanently by their own experts”.

To be clear Loxam has welcomed the initiatives of some of its competitors as their actions have helped bring about the manufacturers solutions.  Loxam also recognises that its approach initially disadvantaged it commercially as it was not an early adopter but it has remained true to the view that:

“developed by the original manufacturer, for their machines and fitted permanently by their own experts”

gives the maximum safeguard for the ultimate customer. A direct parallel would be pot hole protection for scissor lifts, no rental company develops its own solution today, the manufacturer is best placed to ensure full safety compliance in appropriate circumstances.

Today Loxam UK boasts an array of solutions from the original manufacturer:
SIOPS, Skyguard , OPA, ASB are all inexistence on Niftylift , JLGGenie, Haulotte machines, all fitted and fully endorsed by the respective manufacturers.

These electronic devices are supplemented by the mechanical “work zone / sanctuary zone” product which being none electronic is not connected to any of the machines electronic system and is therefore fitted on demand by Loxam UK specialist engineers.

Loxam UK are therefore able to offer the SGD’s across the range of booms from 8 metre working up to 43 metres where the customer feels it is appropriate.
