The changing face of apprenticeships

Apprenticeships were a comprehensive education which taught young people how to be part of a workforce. They instilled the values of excellence and quality in the workplace and served the British industry well throughout the years. I'm very encouraged to see the current revival and to see Apprenticeships take their rightful place as a valid education and career choice that can lead to better things.
The government has recently put a lot of money behind promoting apprenticeship initiatives. Given this - plus current economic woes and increasing University tuition fees - apprenticeships are becoming an increasingly attractive career path option, offering on-the-job training, a monthly wage and excellent career prospects.

What are the benefits of an apprenticeship?

Of the many advantages of an apprenticeship, the most important is professional experience. An apprentice has a number of distinct advantages over interns and graduates; first, they are directly exposed to the business community that they desire to make their career in as an insider. They can form close personal relationships with industry professionals, witness the inner workings of the business, and make valuable contacts. No less important - an apprenticeship means direct, hands-on training. Apprentices learn by seeing and by doing. They inevitably make mistakes, but learn quickly from them. They get a first-hand feel for the nature of the work as well as a chance to hone the skills and tricks needed to become experts. Loxam Access see an apprenticeship as an investment and long-term career offer.

The start of our apprenticeship programme

Loxam Access revived it’s apprenticeship programme at the beginning of 2012, now more than 10% of the workforce are apprentices, aged from 18 to 24. Our first Apprentice Service Engineer has recently completed his 2 year Apprenticeship in Plant Maintenance, he is now a key member of our technical engineering team with further Apprentice Service Engineers throughout our UK branches following in his footsteps.
In 2013, an Apprenticeship in Customer Service resulted in the creation of an efficient, knowledgeable Hire Consultant offering a first class personalised service.
The Business Administration Apprentices are fast becoming vital team assets across the branch network and Head Office functions such as Finance, Human Resources and Loxcall.
The importance of employing young apprentices cannot be over estimated. Investment in their training and development will benefit them as individuals while allowing Loxam Access to grow its leaders of tomorrow. Thank you to all our Apprentices, past and present, they should be proud of their achievements.
